Sometimes, things are so beautiful, it’s hard to analyze them and deconstruct them rather than just letting them be their glorious, elusive self.

There is something universally appealing about Band of Horses’ hit ballad “The Funeral”. Lead vocalist Ben Bridwell’s voice is emotive, haunting, and soothing. Although the lyrics are a bit ambiguous, there is something about the track that wraps itself around the human heart.

When you listen to “The Funeral,” you can envision your life fast forwarding like a Kodak commercial. The good times, the bad times, this song has the power to make you feel it all.

The melody and harmonies are hauntingly nostalgic, especially the layered vocals that begin the song. The simple guitar highlights the soaring opening lyrics, “I’m coming up only to hold you under, and coming up only to show you wrong.”

While the first third of the song is rather simple and vocally focused, the tempo picks up around a minute and half in. The bass and drum tracks match the master recordings impeccably. Every note in the song is paired to the instrumental track as if it were the real note in the original recording.

Another unexpected tempo switch occurs around four and a half minutes in, with an upbeat drum switch-up and more driving guitar and bass tracks. Although the vocals drop out, the song keeps going strong with drums, guitar and bass, perfectly complimenting the earlier singer-focused section.

As of publishing, “The Funeral” is in Rock Band Network Peer Review. If you are a member of the RBN Creators Club, help us out by testing it HERE.
